Log splitters come in a range of configurations; Horizontal log splitters; Vertical log splitters; tractor powered wood splitters; and 2-way log splitters.

When considering what suits you best, you need to consider (a) how much wood you split each year; (b) what size the wood is, i.e. how hard it is to handle; and (c) what you expect to spend on a log splitter.

Horizontal log splitters are the most common. These log splitters are simple and cost-effective to manufacture so tend to be cheaper than vertical or 2-way alternatives.

Vertical log splitters are the easiest to use. Vertical log splitters always operate at bench height and often include a log lifter to lift the logs up to height.

Tractor powered log splitters mean you don't require another engine to worry about, and can be cheaper if you have a tractor available.

2-Way Log Splitters are the fastest log splitters available. With per-split times of as low as 5.5 seconds per split, these machines are the best way to get a lot of wood done in a short space of time.

With a log splitter, good quality engines are essential to ensure your log splitter is reliable and easy to start. Don't buy a log splitter with an un-branded or unfamiliar engine on it.

Here at Taskpower, we run both KOHLER and HONDA engines on our various log splitters. Both engines are very reliable, but are also very well supported by their NZ distributors for parts and warranty.

KOHLER engines are American designed engines and very reliable, we have been selling these engines for over 12 years with next to no problems in that time.

HONDA engines are the #1 small engine in NZ for reliability. They are extremely high quality and reliable.

Here at Taskpower, we don't recommend diesel log splitters.

The reason for this is twofold.

Firstly, small diesel engines are generally very fuel-inefficient. For large engines, yes diesel engines are efficient; however for small engines, due to the engine setup, a small diesel engine is actually less efficient than a small petrol engine.

Secondly, a petrol engine is much easier to start. Diesel engines are much harder to pull over. We don't recommend electric start on a log splitter as the batteries tend to run flat.

In short - yes you can tow a log splitter on the road, although there are some limitations.

We always recommend checking NZTA regulations first.

Normally, you can tow an unregistered log splitter on the road, under 50km/h and up to 50km from your home.

If your log splitter has suspension and lights, you can get it registered as a trailer, and then tow as fast as 90km/h.
